It's amazing to think that it was only around 20 years ago that most old timber
from demolished houses and warehouses was burnt or thrown onto the scrap heap to
be turned into wood chips. But today most of us are aware of the inherent beauty
and scarcity of old timbers and the fact that they can be restored to their
original beauty.
Beautiful old trees, many over hundreds of years old, are now lost in their
natural form but you can still find it if you know where to look.
You’ll find at least one timber yard in most cities around the country that
stock good quality recycled timber and with the ever increasing demand and the
dwindling supply of old fashioned hardwood, you really have to hunt around to
find what you need.
We are searching for an old fashioned timber with plenty of charm to make a
trophy cabinet. Kauri is perfect and the selected piece is ideal with an
outstanding grain. But it does need to be cleaned up – de-nailed, filling the
holes and finally giving it a good sand. Using recycled timber has a number of
advantages. It has a unique weathered and rustic look and is mostly hardwood so
not only is it strong but will last for centuries. And of course it’s great for
the environment because it places less demand on old growth forests.
The old wood comes up beautifully and that trophy cabinet will look sensational.
