One of the heroes of the work site or the home workshop is the power drill.
As usual, always make sure you are wearing protective safety gear. Don’t change
drill bits while it’s plugged in – disconnect the tool first.
The most important tip when it comes to drilling is to make sure you have the
right drill bit for the right job, and that the bit is sharp. And always let the
bit drill the hole, don’t force it. If you are forcing the bit then the bit is
dull.
There are several different drill bits, depending on the job you’re doing.
There’s a wood/timber bit, and masonry bits that have a tungsten tip for
carving out masonry. You need to have your drill on the hammer setting for this.
When using a steel bit use a lubricant to keep the bit cool. When drilling metal
make a centre punch and when drilling hardwood, make a pilot to prevent
splitting. Drill a pilot hole and increase your drill bit until you’re at the
right size for your bolt.
So if you want to prolong the life of your drill bit use the right equipment for
the right job and make your life a bit easier!
