One of the most important skills any professional or handy man must have is the
ability to sharpen tools easily and well. New chisels will obviously have a nice
sharp edge to start with but will dull very quickly. That’s why it’s important
to regularly maintain you tools to keep them in ‘as new’ condition.
To get the edge of a chisel razor sharp you’ll need an oil stone of different
grades, course to fine, and some sharpening oil
To get the bevel, the cutting side, to a shaving sharpness use a wheel to
regrind for a new edge. This then needs to be polished, or honed, which removes
all fine scratches and burrs that remain after sharpening. Start on the coarse
side and work your way to the fine side to get consistent results. Add a few
drops of oil and then hold the bevel flat against the honing stone, pressing
down on the back of the blade at the very tip. Then move it in slow, deliberate
circles keeping the angle constant.
When your tools are sharp accuracy and control becomes a lot easier. And you’ll
eliminate the very real danger of dull blades cutting flesh rather than wood.
