Breakfast, meaning ‘breaking the fast’, is just that – the first meal after
several hours without food. So no wonder it’s the most important meal of the
day, needing to provide plenty of energy for the activities that lie ahead.
Breakfast increases alertness, memory and concentration, improves nutrition,
invigorates the immune system and helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels.
But one in four people don’t eat breakfast and those who don’t are generally
more likely to be overweight and listless. For those that do have breakfast,
cereal is the most popular option, followed by toast, fruit and yoghurt. Eggs
are also very popular, but less than 10% have the ‘traditional’ cooked
breakfast.
Breakfast can be cooked on the barbeque too – whether you are at home or on a
camping holiday.
Pancakes are really simple to make, and bacon and eggs are a huge favourite,
being considered a typically English/Australian breakfast for many years.
