When choosing whitegoods for the laundry and kitchen the most important criteria
these days is to buy appliances with low energy and water use.
There’s a system that makes this choice easy.
We’re all familiar with the energy rating symbols – the more stars the less
power used, but did you know there is also one for water.
The more drops the appliance displays, the more water efficient it is.
Older dishwashers could use up to 40 litres of water per load, but today’s
dishwasher, with three stars, means it uses about 18 litres of water per load.
That’s a huge difference, saving 22 litres of water per load. And if you don’t
rinse them first, which with most new dishwashers there’s no need, you’ll save
another 6 litres per wash.
But the best tip is to make sure you have a full load before reaching for the
dishwasher detergent as every load less saves another 18 litres. All these saved
litres add up, in fact we’re using the same amount of water as we did 25 years
ago, despite the increase in our population.
So when you buy a new dishwasher make sure you use the water rating symbol
because not only are you helping to conserve water, you’re helping your hip
pocket too.
