Mister Ply & Wood - Removing Your Old Kitchen - Setting Up a Painting Kit
Make preparations or a temporary kitchen well before you start to demolish the
existing kitchen.
Leave the essentials close at hand like the kettle, toaster and microwave.
Arrange space for the fridge and have a plan of the new kitchen before you
demolish the old one.
Set up your cooking appliances near a well ventilated area away from curtains
and other flammable objects. If the weather is good, utilise your outdoor area
and cook on the bbq.
Don't forget the fridge. This will also need a temporary home.
When clearing out the old kitchen, pack everything up that your not planning to
use in the temporary kitchen, label the cartons clearly and locate somewhere in
a convient place but away from the construction of the kitchen. Good time to
have a clean out and throw out the old odd plates that you have been hanging
onto for years.
You will be most successful in dismantling the existing kitchen if you approach
the job with care and in a systematic way rather than trying to dismantle
everything at once.
Plan the job carefully, have the proper tools and develop safe work practices.
These factors combined will ensure a successful project.
Dismantling is a job that depends on logic rather that strength and because it
requires more time than skill it is an excellent project to do yourself.
Dismantling is usually done in the following order: appliances and fixtures
disconnected and removed. You might require an electrician to disconnect the
stove. The water can be shut off before you remove the sink and dishwasher.
The countertops are generally loosened by removing screws from inside the
cabinets. The tiles on the wall might be holding the bench top down. Try
removing the bottom line of grout to remove the top. If the tiles are hard to
the top of the bench top, it is difficult in this case to save the tiles if they
were going to be reused. You will most probably destroy the bottom row of tiles
while levering out the bench top.
Try and save one or two cabinets for temporary storage and the remainder are
most easily removed by undoing the fixings between adjoining cabinets. Be
careful and where safety goggles and gloves.
As an alternative to throwing out the old kitchen, advertise it in the trading
post or eBay at a bargain price or free with the old appliances. This is a good
way to get rid of the old kitchen if it is in a reasonable condition.
